I studied occupational health and safety (OHS) at BCIT. Some areas of study included risk assessment and hazard management, training curriculum development, policy and procedure writing, emergency management, ergonomics, fire safety, waste disposal, spill response, communicable disease exposure prevention, accident causation and prevention, investigations, and legislation.
During my time at BCIT I was actively involved with the Indigenous Services Centre, as a peer mentor.
I have over ten years of experience as an OHS professional and have had the opportunity to learn about and support BC First Nation’s with their healthcare service delivery (health centres, nursing stations) functions, along with their business and community operations.
Other industries I have direct health and safety experience in include mining, forestry, electrical/substation construction, large scale green energy projects, manufacturing, and marine/shipyards.
My experience within the provincial system has provided me with a fundamental knowledge base that allows me to navigate the regulatory requirements related to accreditation/certification, WorkSafeBC’s Workers’ Compensation Act, and the federal Canada Labour Code (Part 2 OHS).
I have visited many amazing and unique First Nations communities during my career. This has given me a solid perspective, and a good understanding of the different complexities and challenges that Nations can face in achieving healthy, safe and sustainable working environments.
